En 1945 se casó con Richard Comyns Carr con quien años más tarde se trasladaría a vivir a Barcelona y a Ibiza.

    Esta vida dickensiana sería determinante en su obra, alabada por Graham Greene y Alan Hollinghurst. De fondo autobiográfico, Y las cucharillas eran de Woolworths (1950) es l. a. segunda novela de su autora y reconstruye su matrimonio-relámpago con el artista John Pemberton en el Londres bohemio de los años 30.
